The uneven heating of architectural glazing, typically resulting from shielding by the frame and by irregular shading, produces an uneven temperature distribution, which may induce thermal stresses leading to breakage, a condition often referred to as “thermal shock”.
Here, a simplified engineering approach for the calculation of the temperature field in the panel is presented, which accounts for the presence of shadows and frame, as well as for the different heat exchange phenomena.

Vacuum insulated glazing (VIG) is a glass structure where two glass panes are connected by a hermetic seal over their perimeter, with a vacuum gap between the panes. One case is when this seal is made with solder glass, which is a rigid bridge between the two panes.
When a temperature difference over the VIG is established the temperature profile produces bending of the panes and causes deformations, and stresses, in the glass, which affect the strength of glass.

Making industry-wide standards that require flatness measurements will benefit the aesthetics and end users of tempered products.
